Restoran E&Y Sahul
For those driving into JB late, E&Y is a lively mamak in Johor Bahru.
A quagmire of the night, vehicles zooming across the bridge. It feels like an escape for citizens of the lion city or cheap fuel. From topping up gas, groceries, car washes, and massages, Johor awakens at night, after office hours, after the midday shift.
The night skies loomed over as we went. However, it's a little different when you can hear and see occasional fireworks, celebrating the new lunar year. People setting off rockets into the skies, bright lights bursting and scattering across the sky.
It’s an interesting city when you can see streets alive and dead weaving amongst each other; with some alleys seeming so dark without any source of light, yet some brimming with life.
"Let’s go to E&Y! I’m craving for some Maggie goreng."
"And satay?"
"Yes, please."
An impromptu decision to head over to JB brought us here, with us having the luxury to sleep in for Friday.
The place is filled with people, both Singaporeans and locals, most here for supper eats. The TV blared lazily, showing random TV shows. Times have changed, as people are now glued to their phones, with the TV being there like familiar white noise.
We ordered our food with a mixture of unfamiliar Malay and English. Clumsy counting through the numbers, occasionally signing and gesturing, hoping we would get understood better.
We ordered a serving of Maggie Goreng! Together with bunches of satays and ketupats. The food is pretty decent, probably unfair to compare them with Pauline’s (Rob's and my personal favorite all the way in Genting). They have the best Neslo there so far. The ones here are not too shabby; the hint of coffee is there, the Milo isn’t too sweet. The chicken is crispy in the Maggie goreng, and the serving is generous, leaving us almost unable to finish. It tastes great, carefully cut so we could comfortably eat with our forks.
