Danga Bay Seafood Market
"So what you guys want for dinner?"
"SEAFOOD!", some of our friends chimmed in unison.
After perusing various options and reviews, we settled on heading to Danga Bay, a recreational bay area that's even featured on JB's official tourism website. With the seafood market being just one of the many highlights, Danga Bay is undoubtedly an area to explore while in Johor Bahru.
I love how the huge majestic lobster statue at the front with a huge array of fish tank right by the side. It's a huge spectacle of a place, from the mural at the side, to the fish tanks and also an open kitchen concept where one could watch what's cooking. There's literally an army of chefs and cooks and there's something very culturally unique about Asian Chef which Jimmy O. Yang sums up best.
Other than seafood there's also an variety of dishes from vegetables, chicken to even venison and ostrich?! I knew I need to conquer the fastest bird here. And each of us ordered a dish that we'd like to try; zhi char style.
I'd never really indulged in seafood, often claiming they weren't part of my food chain and sticking to my comfort zone. It was thoughtful of them to encourage me to step out of my comfort zone as they persuaded me to try a raw oyster with a dab of lemon and a touch of Tabasco—ingredients I wouldn't even consider putting in my mouth.
"It feels like an episode of Fear Factor!" I exclaimed as I prepared to taste the raw oyster with my spoon, counting down from 3.

It wasn't as bad as I thought—perhaps not as unpleasant as I'd envisioned. Later on, I tried the "Gong Gong" and Chilli Crab, both first-time experiences for me. Maybe it was the universe nudging me beyond my comfort zone, but at that moment, I had an epiphany: our comfort zones aren't as intimidating as we believe.
The remaining dishes were excellent—the crispy skin of the roasted chicken and the warm ostrich meat, coupled with the rich gravy, left a satisfying impression. Overall, it was an incredible experience for seafood enthusiasts. Although I might not fully appreciate the food as a non-seafood lover, Danga Bay is undeniably a place worth exploring.
