Nan Hai Fei Lai Temple
I arrived an hour early for work, feeling restless and anxious. Instead of idling away at a Kopitiam, sipping coffee and watching Netflix, I decided to explore the area in search of tranquility.
To my surprise, I stumbled upon a temple along the way. It was a welcome discovery, and I made my way inside to seek solace. After making a donation and obtaining a pack of offerings, I inquired about the instructions before commencing my prayers.
The temple was a simple one, unlike some others with more elaborate rituals. It had only three stations, each adorned with nine joss sticks. Simplicity was key, mirroring the focus of my prayers. Gone were the days of seeking wealth and fortune; now, I prayed for health and guidance on life's journey.
I found solace in the quietude of the temple, nestled amidst the conserved architecture of Geylang. Though known primarily as a red-light district, Geylang's proximity and connectivity make it an underdog of a location with hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
It's a district of oddity, where the young rebel while the old retain an unpolished view of the place. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. Geylang seemed like a place deserving of a "reboot" in its own way, and I'm hopeful that it will be given another fresh lease of life in time to come.
In moments like these, amidst the chaos of city life, finding pockets of peace becomes all the more precious. And in the quiet corners of Geylang, I found just that – a sanctuary away from the noise and distractions, where I could connect with my inner self and reflect on life's journey.
