Why Taiwan?
My mind is always on Workaway ever since I stumbled upon them accidentally. So after wavering for a long time, I decided to just take that leap of faith and dive right in. I'll also be documenting the stories down through written and visual media.
Anyway, so after creating a Workaway account, I was down to 5 countries to volunteer in. Of course, there are tons of countries to look at, but you'll never stop browsing!
(Trust me, I have been browsing for months)
Japan
I decided to push Japan back despite its beautiful sakura season as I would really love to conquer Mount Fuji in 2019. Since the climbing period is only from July - September, I decided to give them a miss.
Vietnam/Thailand
Vietnam and Thailand actually come pretty close as they are both vying in the 3rd spot of my favorite country.
I, however, decided to pushed them aside this time as I decided to pick a location where I don't have anybody to "fall" back on.
Hong Kong
My mind was in Hong Kong initially as I miss Hong Kong terribly. I miss speaking Cantonese, I miss getting lost in the streets, I miss the art scene. I miss staying alone in the shoebox apartment while falling asleep to Cantonese TV channels.
And the Art Month was a sign at first, but I didn't see much Workaway opportunities when it comes to Hong Kong, so while putting it on hold I decided to check out Taiwan.
Taiwan
Ah, Taiwan.
I was googling on festivals when the Google Image of Ping Xi Festival took my breathe away. Hundreds of floating lanterns that ascend slowly towards the heavens, while carrying the wishes of a thousand souls.
That seems like my kind of thing.
I love festivals and it'll be a great chance to experience it. Moreover, after checking, the air ticket isn't too expensive. (below SGD$120)
Taiwan's Ping Xi Festival is calling out to me, as I would really love to experience it at least once in my life.
And my heart decides to go with Taiwan for now. I decided to embrace a place I haven't been, and for 2019 I decided to go somewhere new for a start, and see where this takes me.
I don't know much about Taipei, and it's various counties, but I'll definitely come back with stories to tell.
